My grand father was suffering from severe pain in spinal cord. We took him to Medicover Hospitals and there he went through a complex spine surgery. I would like to show my gratitude towards the hospital for taking proper care of my grand father.
What is Microdiscectomy?
Microdiscectomy surgery also referred to as microdecompression surgery, is a surgical treatment that relieves pressure on a lumbar nerve caused by a herniated disc in the lower back. The purpose of the procedure is to reduce discomfort, increase mobility, and assist in resuming regular sitting, standing, and walking functions. An orthopaedic surgeon or a neurosurgeon performs microdiscectomy surgery.
When is Microdiscectomy Performed?
- After the failure of conservative treatments.
- Sciatica
- Herniated disc
How is Microdiscectomy Carried Out?
Microdiscectomy aims to relieve pressure on the nerves by removing the disc material. The surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia. The procedure is carried out on a face-down patient by giving an incision of one to one and a half inches over the damaged disc. A lighted microscope is used to see the damaged area. A scissor-like tool is used to remove the damaged herniated tissue, easing the pressure on the nerve. After the procedure, sutures are used to seal the incision. The patient is usually released the same day or the next day.
What are the Post-procedure Recommendations after Microdiscectomy?
You might anticipate resting for a few days after returning home. Although most patients do not require opioid medication for more than a few days, pain medicine, such as opioids, can be prescribed.
It is recommended to avoid bending or sitting slouched during the first few days after surgery. These activities may trigger re-herniation of the disc by pulling on your incision. One can avoid bending too much by sitting in supportive chairs.
After a microdiscectomy, some patients benefit from physical therapy to increase their activity level.
What are the Advantages of Microdiscectomy?
- Improved mobility in the back or legs
- Sitting, standing, and walking can be resumed.
- Alleviation of leg pain
